The Seven-Sealed Scroll, Phil Kulis

PhilKulis PicIn Revelation 5 we are introduced to a Scroll held in the hand of God the Father. A determination is made as to who is worthy to open the Scroll. And in Chapter 6 the first six of the Seals of the Scroll are opened.

A scroll is a paper coiled around a spool. The inner part of a scroll cannot be accessed before the outer part.

The common image of a seven-sealed scroll is that of a scroll with seven seals along the leading edge so that all seven act as locks to prevent the scroll from opening.

This arrangement of seven “locks” means that all seven must be opened before any part of the scroll can be accessed. This method means any one of the seals would keep the entire scroll sealed and therefore they are redundant. Why would God the Father need six redundant seals locking a scroll when worthiness of the recipient is what enables the seals to be broken?

1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.
2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.
4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.
5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”
6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.

John documents that there are two witnesses to the mechanical nature of the Scroll. That the scroll is to be opened then followed by its seals loosed. Neither the angel nor the Elder says, “loose it’s seals and open it” but rather both witness that the scroll is opened before the seals are loosed.

The scroll is opened and seals are loosed as it is unwound. This indicates that the seals are internal within in the scroll. A seal is opened and the scroll is unrolled. Another seal is broken and the scroll is unrolled further.

This causes a “selah” or pause between the loosing of the seals and allows the effect of the current judgment to “soak in.”

Therefore, the Seals are in sequential order, not simultaneous as some would lead you to believe.

About Paul Lehr

Paul Lehr is a Speech Pathologist and home health provider. The majority of his work focuses on swallowing disorders in neurologically impaired patients. He has been a business owner for the past 20+ years. Paul earned his BS in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Oklahoma State University. His MA was completed in Speech Pathology at Oklahoma State University. When Paul’s son was born prematurely in 2003, there was lots of support from family and friends. Keeping up with phone calls was too much. So he provided e-mails with updates on health and well-being. In time, his son was healthy and came home. The e-mails stopped but Paul was encouraged to keep writing. Three years later, Paul was asked to assist in writing a Sunday school curriculum. The lessons were well received by the local body and on the church website. Again, he was encouraged to keep writing. Next, Paul taught a Sunday School class for junior high and high school students. He would share notes with others from the class he was teaching. In 2010, a young man at a local church encouraged Paul to start a blog. The website focuses on topical studies such as creation, God’s Appointed Holidays and Feasts, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, end times prophecy, ancient Hebrew cultural customs, the Prophet Isaiah, and various topical studies. Three years later, Paul’s 10 year old son told me, “Dad, you need to do updates on how the news is tied to the Bible.” The “Trend Update” was born. In the spring of 2016, a friend and fellow Boy Scout father encouraged Paul to start a YouTube channel. His friend thought it was a natural fit considering the content and subscribers from the website. God’s prophetic words have reached millions in over 190 countries. Isaiah 55:11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. That same Boy Scout father would later introduce Paul to the movies of Trey Smith and the God in a Nutshell Project… Guest speak and presenter duties have focused on the topics of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in God’s Appointed Spring Feasts, Mystery Babylon, the antichrist, Ezekiel 38-39, and current events related to Bible prophecy. At this time, Paul would like to encourage each individual to learn about who God is. Because one way or another, we are all eternal. The issue is our destiny. 1. Scott Bitz says:

Assumption: “A scroll is a paper coiled around a spool.” A scroll can be a paper (or parchment) coiled around itself. The spool is a possible variation, but is not a prerequisite of the word “scroll”. What about the alleged internal seals? How would John know how many seals were there? Revelation 5:1 states that the seals are on the BACK of the scroll. An alternative mechanical description of a scroll could be one that is coiled up corner to corner, forming an elongated helical tube. The seals would be visible and fixed to the BACK of the scroll as per Revelation 5:1. The book could also be opened and pages read sequentially as each seal is broken.
